GRANBY WHALEY- OLYMPIA COMMUNITY
Whaley Row is located at the corner of Whaley and Lincoln
Streets and is in the historic Granby Whaley and Olympia Mill
Villages.
Granby Cotton Mill was completed and began
operations on January 1, 1897; it was located at the upper
end of Heyward Street. The site was chosen because it gave
the mill three options for obtaining power for the mill. They
were able to secure electric power from the Columbia Water
Power Company.
Olympia Cotton Mill is located adjacent to
Granby Mill fronting on Heyward Street with Olympia Avenue
to the east. The mill was constructed in the early 1900's;
they constructed their own power plant at the rear of the
mill to produce power to run the mill.
The 19TH Century decision to locate Olympia
and Granby Mills in the south of Columbia caused the neighborhoods
to be created. That historic character and the physical presence
of the magnificent Granby and Olympia Mills is a tremendous
legacy.
Whaley Row is working with the community to
help shape it's future while celebrating it's past "old
village" character.
